The Morrigan came to me as a crow. I had been reading about her for weeks β the great Irish battle goddess, the shapeshifter, the triple-aspected figure of Badb the scald-crow, Macha who curses kings, and the Great Queen herself β and one morning I walked out to my car and there was a crow sitting on the roof who looked at me with a directness that made the back of my neck prickle. She was there again the next morning. And the next.
The Morrigan does not show up to make your life comfortable. There is genuine challenge in working with her, and she will not let you remain in pleasant spiritual stagnation. She is a goddess of sovereignty β of your own right and responsibility to stand fully in your power β and that means she tends to put you in situations where you must either claim yourself honestly or admit that you are not yet willing to do so.
In Irish mythology she appears most famously in the Ulster Cycle, particularly in her interactions with CΓΊ Chulainn, whom she simultaneously tests, offers her favor, and ultimately appears to at his death. She is the washer at the ford β the figure seen cleaning the armor of those who are about to die in battle. She is not death itself but the force that stands at the threshold of transformation, that presides over the necessary endings that make new life possible.
What she has asked of me, over the years: honesty about where I am avoiding difficulty. Willingness to move through fear rather than around it. The active cultivation of my own courage rather than waiting for circumstances to require it. The Morrigan is not interested in passive devotees. She is interested in people who are actually working to become who they are meant to be.
Her sacred animals β the crow, the raven, the wolf β appear consistently in my practice. Red is her color, and the raw red of blood at that. Iron. The battlefield not as glorification of violence but as the stark place where everything unessential is stripped away and you discover what you are actually made of.
Approach her with genuine respect and genuine honesty. Bring offerings: whisky, red wine, crow feathers collected with care, your own sincere acknowledgment of where you are struggling and where you are hiding from yourself. She will meet you there. What happens after that will be real, and it will change you.
