The question I get asked most often by pagans who are building their own path is some version of: "How do I know if what I'm feeling is real guidance or just what I want to feel?" It is an excellent question and I don't think there is a crisp, final answer to it. But there are things I have learned over years of practice that help me navigate it.

Genuine intuitive guidance tends to have a quality of steadiness. It doesn't shout or panic. It doesn't change depending on my mood. If I quiet down and ask a genuine question of my deeper self or the divine, the answer that comes from a real place tends to arrive quietly and remain consistent when I check it again hours or days later. The answers that come from wishful thinking tend to be louder, more urgent, more invested in a particular outcome, and less consistent under examination.

The body knows things that the mind does not. One of the most reliable practices I have developed is checking genuine intuitive hits against physical sensation. A real yes has a quality of opening, of ease, of something clicking into place. A real no has a quality of constriction, of subtle resistance, of my body subtly leaning away. Learning to read these signals requires practice because we are generally trained to override bodily wisdom with intellectual reasoning, but with attention the signals become clearer over time.

Documentation matters enormously here. When I act on something I believe was intuitive guidance, I write it down: what the impression was, when it came, what I did in response, and what followed. Over years, patterns emerge. The category of impressions that consistently proved accurate becomes distinguishable from the category that consistently led me astray. That distinguishability is the beginning of genuine discernment.

On a self-defined path, you don't have a teacher or tradition telling you which experiences are valid. That can feel lonely and uncertain. But it is also an enormous gift — it places full responsibility for your practice in your own hands, which means the growth is entirely yours too. Learn to trust yourself slowly, earn that trust through observation and honesty, and the path will become clearer with every step.
