The most famous inscription at the temple of Apollo at Delphi was not the oracle's prophecies. It was two words carved in the stone at the entrance: Gnothi seauton. Know yourself. Every person who came to Delphi seeking guidance passed those words first, and they were meant as a prerequisite — you cannot ask good questions if you do not know yourself, and the oracle at Delphi was nothing if not a teacher of better questions.

Apollo is a god of many domains: the sun, music and poetry, archery, medicine and healing, prophecy and truth. What ties these together is the quality of clarity. The sun illuminates. Music orders sound into meaningful pattern. The archer sees clearly and holds still before releasing. Healing requires accurate diagnosis. Prophecy is nothing without the interpreter who understands what is being said. Apollo, in all his aspects, is the god of being able to see clearly and to speak truly about what you see.

My relationship with Apollo began through music. The Delphic tradition of seeking guidance from Apollo is the ancestor of a great deal of modern divination practice. The oracle did not tell you what to do. The oracle told you the truth of your situation in language that required your own interpretation — because correct action had to come from your own understanding, not from external prescription. This is still how genuine divinatory guidance works. The cards, the runes, the signs — they reflect the situation. You must still do the interpretation and the choosing.

If you want to work with Apollo, begin with music, begin with the practice of speaking truth carefully and precisely, begin with asking better questions of yourself and the world. That quality of seeking clarity is the foundation of his favor.
